What Does BBB Do? Connecting with Business, Customers, and the Community
It’s good to have a reputation. Sometimes, though, a reputation doesn’t quite cover everything.
Many people know and trust Better Business Bureau. If you’re looking for a contractor or wanting to find out more information about the company you’re purchasing something from, we’ve likely got the information you’re looking for.
But what we do goes so far beyond that. For consumers and businesses alike, the resources that BBB Serving the Pacific Southwest provides cover a wide range of needs and initiatives. We offer education, scholarships, and business enrichment opportunities accessible to everyone.
BBB for Entrepreneurs
Our commitment to businesses extends beyond reviews and accreditation. At BBB, we are a resource for all kinds of businesses, offering information and knowledge you need to grow and succeed.
BBB Accreditation provides businesses with a visible sign of trust for their customers and clients, and our business programs offer the insight and tools needed to back that promise. Below, we’ve outlined a few of the many programs and services we have to help new business owners grow their businesses.
For businesses just starting, it can be tough to know how to navigate the business world. From dealing with marketing efforts to working through business accounting, and even keeping track of inventory, it can all be a bit daunting.
In partnership with GoDaddy, BBB Blueprint is an online incubation program dedicated to helping entrepreneurs develop their businesses. Its courses help new and fledgling businesses get their legs, offering the educational resources they need to be confident and secure in their business dealings. Our program helps new business owners understand the inner-workings needed to launch and maintain a business, and equips them with the knowledge to do it all successfully.
The Empower by GoDaddy and BBB Main St. Accelerator Program is a virtual, multi-month business education course. The online program provides interactive sessions, mentorship by esteemed entrepreneurs, networking, complimentary GoDaddy products, and business insights.
Some of the topics our Empower Cohorts have been instructed on include web design and development, persona creation, legal frameworks, financial well-being, and much more. We aim to equip our participating entrepreneurs with the knowledge they need to thrive in their business.
Additionally, for businesses looking to raise capital through alternative means, BBB partnered with Kiva, GoDaddy, and the City of Phoenix to do exactly that. Kiva is a nonprofit with a mission to connect people through lending.
Leveraging the internet, Kiva lets individuals chip in as little as $25 to help create opportunities for businesses. Think of it as a Kickstarter for a business loan. Small business loans through the Phoenix Kiva Hub are zero percent interest, have terms between 12 and 36 months, and range in amount from $1,000 to $15,000 for qualifying businesses. Unlike traditional banks, Kiva loans don’t require a minimum credit score, years of cash flow documents, or collateral. It’s the perfect resource for businesses looking to excel the growth of their business.
BBB for Business Solutions
Many of the options above apply more specifically to new businesses. BBB also offers solutions for established businesses. Whether it’s marketing solutions to help you stay organized or sponsorship opportunities to continue to add recognition to your brand, BBB can help.
Though they’ve become the de-facto method of distributing information due to recent events, webinars have long been a terrific format for sharing knowledge.
During the spring and early summer of 2020, BBB hosted daily webinars, featuring guest speakers from all types of industries. Leaders shared their expertise on a variety of topics including marketing, accounting, business management, leadership, mental health and wellness, and much more.
In addition to those more general webinars, BBB also hosts regular Success in 60 Webinars, which cover a business topic all in 60 minutes, allowing for time to network and ask questions of business experts. Our Upcoming Events page always features any webinars, seminars, or conferences that we have in the works.
Even established businesses still need to work on marketing and advertising to remain top of mind. BBB is prepared with a wide range of options to meet any advertising budget with a spot that’s right for you.
If you’re looking for an enhanced listing on BBB.org, something that will catch the attention of anyone searching for your business or within the industry you’re positioned in, we can help with that.
With a BBB sponsorship, you can add recognition and prestige to your business name.

Virtual & In-Person Summits
We have a long history of providing consumer education through various events, but recently we have ramped it up. We’ve added more summits targeting all kinds of different communities, offering opportunities to learn, grow, and network.
In August, we’ll be hosting our fourth annual Industrious Women’s Summit, where we invite women in the trades and spend a day celebrating them, sharing stories, and making connections.
Based on the success of the Industrious Women’s Summit, in 2020, we also launched the International Entrepreneur Summit. This summit aims to reach immigrant communities (refugee, undocumented, DACA, TPS, etc) to teach them the options, resources, or possibility of starting a business to create self-sustainability. We also launched the Veteran’s Ventures Summit, which is focused on providing skills to veterans to support them as they seek to be integral members of the entrepreneur community.
BBB for Community
But BBB is more than the services it provides to businesses. BBB has always empowered consumers, giving them the trust they need to shop with confidence. We’re also constantly working hard to give back to the community through informational summits and events, and scholarships, and offer our employees one day each quarter to volunteer for a cause they care about.
BBB is committed to providing scholarship opportunities for our local high school students and student-athletes. Our scholarship opportunities focus on rewarding students who embody integrity and highlight those who work hard to educate and serve their community.
Our Ethical Athlete Scholarship recognizes high school athletes in Arizona whose ethics stand out to coaches, teammates, and fans. Throughout the year, BBB and AIA select sixteen BBB Ethical Athletes from nominations, awarding the winners a scholarship. Then, at the end of the year, one male and one female are chosen as Ethical Champion and receive an additional scholarship bonus along with a trophy.
The BBB Ambassador Scholarship arms students preparing for college with the information and knowledge they need to ward off scams. Students are the most susceptible and vulnerable targets for fraudulent activity, with 41.6 percent of students reporting a loss when exposed to a scam, compared to just 28.3 percent of non-students. The program provides them with the resources and tools needed for navigating credit and budgeting, online safety, rentals and housing, student loans and scholarships, and employment scams.
BBB is proud to offer many different scholarships, and we’ve only just scratched the surface here. For more information on some of the other scholarship programs provided by BBB, visit scholarships.bbbcommunity.org.
Our consumer newsletter includes the latest information from BBB. Whether it’s tips for financial success or updates on recent scams or fraudulent activity, BBB has you covered.
Sent twice each month, this newsletter condenses the news and information that has come across our radar, and pairs it with information on upcoming opportunities and events we have planned for you.

Torch Awards for Ethics
BBB is best known for its BBB Accreditation and business reviews. Consumers and businesses alike look to BBB to determine where they should place their trust and to determine how to spend their hard-earned money.
BBB’s Torch Awards for Ethics are an extension of that, highlighting businesses that go above and beyond to help fulfill BBB’s mission of creating trust between buyers and sellers. Each year, we accept nominations from consumers and businesses for companies that have demonstrated the highest standards of integrity. Traditionally, we gather to celebrate the finalists and winners, showcasing them on stage, and giving them the chance to highlight their achievement.
Are you proud of your business’s commitment to ethics? Consider nominating your own business for the 2021 Torch Awards for Ethics. Our nominations are open now.
BBB: A Resource for All
BBB’s mission is to encourage and advance an ethical marketplace for both buyers and sellers. Each of the services we provide is done to achieve this goal. By providing opportunities for BBB Accreditation, business resources, consumer tips, scam alerts, and more, we are helping to pave a road of trust between companies and their customers.
Small businesses comprise 99.9 percent of all U.S. businesses. We hope our programs and services will aid in the entrepreneurial process of running and managing a business. By working in our community, encouraging ethical behavior, and promoting the entrepreneurs and business owners that operate with integrity, we know we can create a trustworthy place to conduct business.
